BFA in Media Arts
Admission to the Media Arts (BFA Honours) program is based both on academic performance and artistic merit. Academic admissibility is assessed by York University, while artistic merit is evaluated by the Department of Cinema & Media Arts. Therefore, the application to the Media Arts program is a two-step process.
Applications to this program are accepted for Fall, Winter and Summer entry.
You may apply to more than one AMPD program; however you must apply separately to each one.
Step 1: Apply to York University
Current York University students interested in transferring to the program should contact the Department of Cinema & Media Arts directly at email@example.com to apply.
Step 2: Complete the Questionnaire and Portfolio Upload
In addition to applying for admission to York through the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC) or York University’s Application, applicants to the Media Arts program must complete a Questionnaire and Portfolio Upload.
Once you have applied to the program you will receive an email that will include your reference ID and directions for completing the Questionnaire and Portfolio Upload. This email will be sent approximately 5-10 business days after you submit your application. If you are applying to more than one AMPD program, you must complete a separate Audition/Interview/Portfolio Review for each one.
Media Arts Questionnaire and Portfolio Upload
The Questionnaire and Portfolio Upload for the Media Arts program includes a resume, a written statement, and a portfolio review.
The written statement is an opportunity for you to express why you feel the Media Arts program is a good fit for you. The Media Arts program will encompass critical and creative practice. Students will be engaging with digital culture, the internet, social media, gaming and new technologies such as augmented reality and virtual reality and so much more. Related but distinct from traditional cinematic practices, Media Arts employs a multitude of creative platforms and modalities. It stresses collaborative work processes, inventiveness, open exploration and a profound commitment to social justice as a guiding principal.
The portfolio requirement consists of three examples of your own creative work and/or collaborations. These can take ANY form and should best represent you as a creative/artistic individual. These works should demonstrate your passion, potential, and ability to communicate ideas. You may submit a short video, photographs, drawings, samples of creative writing or any other materials you feel will help us understand you as a creative individual. If you submit a collaboration or team project, briefly describe your contribution. Time-based works (video, sound, performance materials) must be no longer than 3 minutes in length each.
Faculty will review your Questionnaire and Portfolio submissions to try and understand you as a future Media Arts student. At this stage we are looking for imagination and passion – not production value and polish.
A $60 CAD evaluation fee is required to submit your questionnaire and portfolio.
Your resume, written statement, and portfolio, along with your most recent available grades, will be reviewed by faculty members.
